How is everyone going about finding their 10 prospective customers who are not friends and family to interview? Are you starting cold conversations with people at coffee shops? Are you cold calling from the phone book? Is there something like Tinder that is designed for businesses instead of dating (LOL)? What kind of questions are you asking them? What are you learning from your interviews with them?

    Love to hear your stories!

I have done two large trade shows in the last three weeks which gave me the opportunity to interview many prospective customers.

I asked them what they were looking for ad for the most part, it was gifts they were buying and it was in the $30 – $50 price range. June is for Dads, Grads, and weddings, so that is what they were shopping for. Of interest, is that although I specialize in cutting boards and charcuterie trays, I sold more crib boards and BBQ scrapers because people were buying for Father’s Day. The cutting boards were gifts for friends and family and weddings. There were a few personal use, but the majority were gifts. The feedback from my retailers is similar – the artisan cutting boards are more of a Christmas item.

Based on that feedback, I booked myself into several trade shows in November/December where the organizers promote to my target market.

When you consider your potential customer, would they be consumers or businesses? If businesses in the alternative energy realm, I would start by calling solar installers or suppliers and what you may find, is that most people want to be helpful and connect you with someone who may be of assistance.

Remember, in business there are no foolish questions. Let’s say that you are exploring competitive products, you will learn nuggets along the way. After all, we don’t know what we don’t know.

    I hope this helps.
