Hi, my name is Dana Whitty and I am from North Sydney, Nova Scotia. I recently retired from the CAF last June. I was a CIC officer for 18 years working with youth in many communities in Nova Scotia.
The last ten years of my civilian career was spent working in the field of employment services- in various capacities; however our business recently closed and I find myself unemployed for the first time in my 20 year career, so I am hoping to start my own business, which has always been a dream of mine.
My business idea is to start an Ice Cream Shop in my home town as that market is current is not occupied— and who doesn’t like ice cream! 🙂
Two questions :
1. What are the first steps to take when you want to start you’re own business (and the steps after that!!)?
2. What is a good business plan template to use? (for financing)I look forward to meeting everyone and learning more about your businesses!
Those are great questions Dana! Generally, once you have developed your business model, most entrepreneurs will set their sites on considering sources of capital. You’ll need to develop a business plan to access capital, in most cases. From there, you’d go on to license, register, and insure your business.
There are lots of great, free, online/interactive business planners. Futurpraneur and BDC are two which are national.

There is a famous ice cream shop in Cochrane, Alberta, about 20 minutes from the city of Calgary, called MacKay’s Ice Cream (https://www.mackaysicecream.com/). They opened in the early 1950s and are an icon drawing about 5,000 visitors on a nice day. Years ago I lived in Cochrane and was the president of the Chamber of Commerce. At that time, we developed the economic development plan around the tourists that MacKay’s Ice Cream attracted to the community.
There are some excellent ice cream shop examples from coast to coast. I hope they can be sources of ideas for your shop.
