Hi folks, I’m W. Neil Burrell. I live in Belleville, Ontario. I’ve been released for just under a year after about 37 years as an Army Reservist. I’ve done the Infantry NCM thing and then left to go to University. Came back as an Armoured Officer and then moved on to Log. I’ve done a Reg Finance crse but spent most of my later career as a unit Adjt. On my tour in Afghanistan, I was the Adjt of the Cdn HQ along with some other tasks. I spent the last five years working with Army Cadets.

In my civ occupation I was a Young Offender Probation Officer – a Youth Worker.

I’m now working towards launching a Canoe School. I’m a life-long paddler, but to teach cadets, I needed credentials and discovered that there are very few places near me to get formal canoe training. I saw an oppourtunity so now I’m looking at offerring such services on top of trying to get kids paddling.

Back when I signed up for this bootcamp, I was awaiting an appointment for some COVID delayed heart surgery. I’ve just been advised that a date may be coming for next month.

One of my two burning questions is about websites. Is it less expensive to have one designed and hosted or to try it as a DIY project? I also have questions about small business liability insurance.

    Hi Neil,

The DIY website builders/hosting platforms have come a long way. As a brand new start up, I’d suggest starting with one of those. There’s an incredible amount of templates available to make getting started easy. I have literally zero website experience and was able to launch an online retail store through Shopify, just as an example. It keeps the costs very low.

You might consider outsourcing website development when you need something customized. But 90% of the time, that’s not required. Or, it can wait until later when you know your business really well.

    Hope that helps!

Oh, sorry, I forgot to respond to your question about insurance.
Given the elevated risks associated with the nature of your business, this is a conversation you’re going to need to have with your insurance company.
You will need more than basic liability coverage.
