Hi my name is Brook, I’m a reservist of 16 years in Montreal. I found the application for this in a newsletter and thought I would be able to use it as I could be leaving the forces soon enough and I’ll be giving a fresh look on the main business side.

I’m an existing business owner in the financial services industry and have had trouble with the adaptation requirements due to COVID. I would like to go online for marketing since the face to face/networking is not really allowed and also seems to be a welcomed change for many clients and potential customers. They don’t like evening meetings after work and traffic, trying to find parking etc.

A website and social media presence is what I would like to accomplish but I have VERY LOW skills in web/tech and online marketing.

Interesting fact – I’ve had 4 jobs of 10+ years

    1. How can I take the most advantage of this course to help me ‘restart’ my business online?
    2. What are some of the newer solutions for online networking/marketing connecting to customers requiring service industries?

    Brook,

    Welcome!

E-Marketing is an amazing study and we are each perfect examples to explore. Where to we each look for credible information in an online world? How do we know what is correct information and what is not?

I like to search websites and have no faith in information found on social media. How about others – where do you find credible information in the online world?

This is the truth! I personally don’t like to buy online, mush less even click something I’m not expecting.
I’m always skeptical and when it comes to information I am not aware of a little bit already, it takes me a longer time to assimilate and digest the bulk of the information after sorting out the fluff of course. I also find it hard to build trust online (this is one thing I’d like to make easier for prospective clients). Being very honest. I know I could fill the skill gaps with ‘experts’ but in this area I’m a bit like the newbie car owner at the garage for repairs. I’m also short on capital to invest. “Don’t take advantage of me but I have no idea to know if you are.”

Any tips for me on the next section? I have a draft but I’ll revise before I submit. I’ll catch up soon!

    Brook,

I like to build trusting relationships in other ways and then utilize electronic media to keep that relationship alive.

Thoughts on how you can initially build relationships in other ways?

That’s a good point. I’m very similar in that sense. I believe the electronic media is a little bit impersonal at times, yet it’s a great tool to be able to communicate on a larger scale (more efficiently.

My ideal start is with an introduction, if I can leverage the trust one person has in me towards the next person then I’m starting ahead. To get this done effectively I need to be referable and I think in large part, having a website or at minimum a quality landing page would help that out in today’s world.

In the financial services when I reach out to people they almost always assume I’m trying to make a sale – and their previous experiences create high resistance.

I am pretty good at building trust with new contacts – but how can I build it with people I have yet to connect with? I have to go back to character – maybe testimonials, transparency and honesty, clear and quality communications or publications.

Which ways would you do it, or do you do it? Give me a push in a good direction?

    Brook,

Also consider what we call education marketing. It is where you share information, tips, hints, tools as a way of building trust.

Thoughts on how you could use education as a linkage to clients?

Yes for sure! I’m happy you mentioned that. I have a lot of ideas on that to eventually share with an audience of sorts – but I think I need a bit more of a cohesive set up with website, social media, etc. I don’t know though. Everyone seems to enjoy my ideas, but I really like relationship building and I think for me that’s delivered so far in a one-on-one mentality rather than broad groups at this point. I’m going through all of this to hopefully help me get to a bigger group, better marketing etc.

    Brook,

Very good points! Marketing is all about building relationships with people.
